PROJECT: Bath Street

LOCATION: Bath Street, Portobello

CLIENT: Buckley Builders Ltd.

STATUS: Planning application 2016

DESCRIPTION: A development of 20 one, two and three bed flats, within a refurbished former 1930s art deco cinema.

The former County Cinema, designed by Thomas Bowhill Gibson was built in 1939 and operated as a cinema until 1974 when it was converted into the George Bingo Hall. When the bingo hall ceased operating, the building was in a state of disrepair both internally and externally.

The proposals involve the retention of the front façade and side wings of the original building, including partial restoration of missing original elements, with demolition of the auditorium at the rear and removal of the asbestos panelling which forms the existing roof. The development will create 20 flatted dwellings including garages, car parking and associated landscaping.
